Grading Procedures for Chemistry

Teacher:  Michael Vossen

General Grading Policies:

Grading will consist of Tests, Quizzes, Homework and Project Points

All points are identical!  No ‘weighted’ points or ‘weighted’ categories.

Tests:  Average of 25-30 points per test, 3 or 4 tests/quarter, approximately 100 points/quarter.  Typically each test will contain multiple choice, problem-solving, and essay questions.  Classwork, homework, and quizzes will align with tests.  There will be no re-taking of quizzes or tests to improve a quiz or test grade.

Quizzes:  Typically about 10 - 15 points/quiz, every Friday (unless there is a test) for a total of approximately 60 - 100 points/quarter.

Homework:  Assignments almost every day (except Fridays), worth one point for completion regardless of correctness of answers.  No credit for late homework.  Total available points for homework will be approximately 30 points/quarter.  Also in this category are laboratory reports, worth 10 points, approximately 5 or 6 per quarter for 50 – 60 points/quarter.

Project Points – This category incorporates a variety of optional opportunities, including group projects (such as model-building, Rube Goldberg devices, Challenges, etc.), special events (Bridge-building Competition, Mousetrap Cars Races, etc.), and presentations to 4th grade class*, etc.  Students may earn up to 50 points in this category during the marking period.

In addition, students may earn up to 15 extra credit points in this category by:

§        Reading a scientific magazine article and writing a summary (approximately 10 points, depending on the length of article and quality of summary).

§        Writing a report about the scientific errors found in a science fiction movie.

§        Conducting an investigation at home (with approval of the procedure in advance from both the teacher and parents).

§        Bringing in a newspaper article about a current topic in science (2 points for just brining it in, 10 points if a report is written).

§        Producing a poem, song, cartoon, PowerPoint presentation, etc. related to the topics being studied.

§        Identifying my error when I make any kind of mistake (1 point per error).

Diversified Learners:  Learning and testing will modified for students with special needs.

Make-up Work:  Students will be allowed to make-up work missed for excused absences.
