Dear Incoming MAT Student,
On behalf of the faculty of the Pacific University College of Education, I would like to welcome you as a member of the 2019-2020 Fifth-Year/MAT program. We are very excited about the upcoming year: it promises to be filled with new experiences on the Pacific campus as well as in Oregons public schools. I will be the coordinator of one of the "strands" of the MAT program that includes those persons interested in receiving Multiple Subjects authorizations, and I will also be your professor for six courses during the year. Because of this close connection, I will serve as your advisor and will be highly involved assisting you to prepare for your teaching career. While I have had the chance to meet many of you already, I wanted to provide you with some information to help you plan for the summer session.
Pacifics Fifth-Year MAT program is a 12 month program beginning on June 17th, 2019 and ending approximately June 20th, 2019. Jennifer and Kate have created a summer calendar listing the dates and times of summer courses to allow you to better plan your summer. Your first day of courses will be on Tuesday June 18th.
The Multiple Subjects strand will be having an orientation meeting on July 26th from 12:00 1:00 prior to the first Advanced Education Psychology class in Room 019. Bring a brown bag lunch if you would like.
Required Texts for the course will be:
Woolfolk, A. (2010). Educational Psychology (11th Edition)
Bruner, J. (1960). The Process of Education. Harvard University Press.
One last suggestion: I strongly recommend that you invest in a laptop computer. I further suggest (and students from the past two years emphasized I need to do so) that it be an Apple computer. We have worked to develop an excellent computer lab in the College of Education containing Macs, PCs, and all of the software you will need. However, it will make your learning experience so much more powerful and you will be better prepared for a teaching job, if you invest now in your own laptop. If you need to purchase a laptop, I am a technology specialist and have put together a website that contains recommendations. You should also note that as a Pacific student you can receive special educational discounts.
So once again, congratulations and welcome. I am really looking forward to learning with you and getting to know you. I expect that this will be a year of powerful learning experiences for all of us and I hope I can assist you in whatever needs you may have. If you have any pressing questions feel free to email me at baileym@pacificu.edu, or call me at 503-352-1442. I will see you on the 26th.
Sincerely,
Mark Bailey Ph.D.
