Google Earth--a first activity to explore the tool
How far away was the closest earthquake?


Google Earth tool objectives:
    • Use a specific Google Earth layer to answer a question.
    • Use the ruler tool in Google earth, both in line and path modes
    • Learn to find and add a KML file to My layers from the web

Possible curriculum objectives:
    • Measure distances in kilometers
    • Use a map and interpret its symbols to answer a question
    
Questions:
  • How close to Carnegie Hall is the closest recorded earthquake?
    •    When did it happen?
    •    What was its magnitude?
    •    How far is it in Km from Carnegie Hall on a straight line?
    •    How far is it in Km by road? How close does the nearest road/driveway come to it?

    How close to Carnegie Hall is the closest recorded earthquake in the last 7 days?
    •    When did it happen?
    •    What was its magnitude
    •    How far is ii in Km from Carnegie Hall on a straight line?
    •    How far is it in Km by road? How close does the nearest road/driveway come to it?

Technical notes

Application: Google Earth
Turn on "earthquakes" under the geographic features layer
Use the ruler tool with both line and path features and set the unit to Km
Find on the web and add the USGS real time earthquakes KML file on to your copy of Google Earth
