III. Classroom Climate

Candidate establishes a classroom climate conducive to learning, e.g. positive classroom management, a safe and developmentally appropriate environment, efficient organization of time and materials, and effective transitions.

At the beginning of the school year I start a tradition that lasts all school year in my class.  When I take attendance I ask a question that everyone in the room has to answer.  This question is about the students dislike and likes.  For example, what is your favorite color, actor, movie, and more.  We are able to take that 2-3 minutes to build a relationship with each other as a whole and that relationship is based on respect and it shows in the student teacher rapport.

If you walk into my classroom you will see a large TV with the words 'Tune into Learning' written on it that I use to show the students their notes.  Also on the walls are tips and trick to use a calculator and various mathematical operations.  While we are in a unit, the students are exposed to graphic organizers and word walls that are posted around the room.  Any student activity that has been done recently is displayed for all to appreciate.  There is a white board that shows the daily content objectives and language objectives that the students will need to place on their agenda for parents to see.  Students will have a routine that they are taught within the first few days that they follow.  This includes how the transitions work in the class and the high level of expectations that I have for the students.

Students are grouped in a variety of ways depending on the concepts and activities that are being taught at the time.  Some of the groupings are by interest, ability or student choice.  Also, I do have a variety of adults coming in and out of my classroom.  I usually have a chance to talk with the adults to tell them about the content that is being taught that day, the grouping, and problem areas to watch out for if there are any.  I feel that the professionals that are coming into my room are more effective if they have the basic information ahead of time.  Of course this 'basic information' does not include any confidential information and is almost always content information and background.

My classroom has tables in it.  I believe in group work and the ability of the students to ask a question to their peers and work out any content problems that they might have.  Also, the tables are arranged so that the students are able to maneuver around the classroom, obstructing the view of few students while they are going where they need to go.  I have an area that is for school supplies for any student that might not have the supplies for money reasons.  I leave it up for anyone to help the  students that can't afford the supplies save face.  My desk will be messy during the day.  I try to allow time at the end of the day to clean it up but this does not always work.

XI. Technology

Candidate demonstrates the appropriate and thoughtful use of technology.

Technology is an important part of my classroom.  The first tool that I use is the word program that helps with in creating the handouts, notes, parent letters, and newsletters.  This is an important tool for educators because it gives the sense of professionalism.  Teaching as a profession has not had community support for recognizing that teachers are professionals.

The next big tool that I use is Power Point.  I use these for creation of the notes or for back to school notes for my parents to see what I am doing.  I can put the Power Point on a timer and it answers the frequently asked questions that the parents have.  The only drawback is that in my building we have three machines that can handle a presentation like this and at times it is difficult for the teacher to reserve one.

Technology can also be used as a means of communicating with parents.  This includes emails but more importantly, my website.  I have a website that allows the parent to see the different concepts that we will be teaching and when assignments are due.  This is also a website for students to go to that allows them to ask me or another student questions about their homework.  Another function is that students that are absent can get their homework and notes off the web page if it available.

Finally, I use the Internet to find other ways that concepts are being presented or find research on instructional strategies in the mathematics classroom.  Since math is, well, extremely dull, I like to find ways to spice it up and make it more meaningful for the students.  Also, the way that students are being taught in other countries is meaningful information for me when I get a new student from a different land.

Here is an example of a power point used in my class.  This is used to show students that math is found in the real world.  This link is only good in Internet explorer.
