Doors
The things she taught were
deeper
Surpassing words and rhetoric
She opened concealed doors
Exposing hidden people and
their accomplishments
And other doors
Doors I thought I had been
through
But upon emerging, realized I
had not
Doors of truth
Awareness
Responsibility
Concern for others who are
different
Tenderness
Compassion
She did not simply teach
She educated

While raising her own family, Mrs. Cluff began working with local
schools as an artist in residence, guiding children as young as six
through the writing process. This experience sparked in her a desire to
work with young people after her immediate family of ten children had
grown. In
1999, at the age of fifty, Mrs. Cluff began the long process of
acquiring her education. Six years later, with her Associates,
Bachelor's and a Master's of Education degrees attained, and having
completed the Graduate Teacher Education Program required by the state
of Oregon, she began her current career as a professional teacher.
Her love of writing made her well suited for a career in the English
Language Arts. She also found that since her family had grown, she had
nearly unlimited time at her disposal to devote to her new family of
approximately 200 students per semester.
After five years of teaching, Mrs. Cluff had to make the decision of
whether to continue teaching under a Renewable License through the
state of Oregon, or to secure her Continuing Teaching License (CTL). She could have also chosen to
continue her education toward a Doctorate degree, or become National
Board Certified. Because the two latter choices would have taken time
away from her hands-on time with her students, and because she wanted
something a little more permanent than a renewable license, she decided
to secure her Continuing Teaching License.
The
state of Oregon has outlined twelve advanced competencies which should
be exemplified by every continuing educator. Evidence of these
competencies is essential when pursuing a Continuing Teaching License.
Through this portfolio, others will be able to assess
the project online. This portfolio will also be
accessible to other future educators who may be pursuing a CTL as
well. Perhaps it will even serve as a springboard to their own
portfolios. This online portfolio was created from a template provided
by Pacific University. The examples of how each
competency has been addressed are given by the author. Much of the
evidence
supporting these examples is generated by the author's students.
