My Grading and Expectations

Grading
My grading is based on in-class work (15%), homework (15%), quizzes (35%), and tests (35%).  I seldom give extra credit assignments, but if I do they will be posted on the website.

Printouts of current grades with each assignment and grade from the term are handed to students every Friday.  If a school week does not have a Friday, your child will not be receiving a printout that week.
Quadbooks
All assignments in-class and homework are done in a graph composition book.  It is important to have a composition style book because they don’t fall apart and the graph paper is essential to our math computation work.  Parents in the past have drilled them to put holes in them so they can easily travel back and forth from home to school.  It is imperative that students always have them in class and take them home to do their homework in them.  Quadbooks are graded daily depending on our homework schedule.  They are not graded on accuracy, but that all assignments in-class, vocabulary, and homework are complete and clear.  Students correct their own work each day in class so they have immediate feedback.

Vocabulary is part of a student’s in-class grade.  Students are given time in class to complete each of the four sections of the vocabulary assignment for each assigned word.  The vocabulary blackline is on my webpage for your reference.

In-class work is usually a problem from the text that students work on in a small group.  Towards the end of class, a student group shares their work with the class.  That work will also be published to the web to help parents see and understand the work that is done in class.  If students do not finish the in-class problem in their quadbook, it will be considered homework.

Homework is assigned usually every night and is posted on my website.  All homework is due the next class period unless stated.  Homework is given from ACE (Application, Connection, and Extension) problems from each unit.  Sometimes students will be given starred (*) problems that can be completed if they need more practice or double stars (**) mean they are challenging.  Starred problems are not required but can be useful in making adaptations to your child’s math learning.

Assessment
Quizzes usually occur at the end of an Inventory (chapter) and are kept short so they give students and myself feedback without taking a whole class from instructional time.

Tests are given at the end of each unit or book, are usually longer and more difficult.  Study topics and sometimes questions will be given to students in advance as well as posted on the web.  This year I will give an optional project students can do in leu of taking their Test score to show their learning.  They will still be required to take the test.  Projects will be posted and handed out to students in the middle of the unit.

There will be no retakes on Tests or Quizzes.  Students are expected to prepare and ask for help in advance.  I seldom do “pop” quizzes.
Preparedness
Students should always bring with them to class a pencil, eraser, scientific calculator, quadbook, and math textbook.

Textbooks are checked out from the library.  If a student cannot find their textbook, I suggest they checkout another one from the library while they are looking so they have one for homework and class time.
