The ISTE National Educational Technology Standards (NETS•T) and Performance Indicators for Teachers

Effective teachers model and apply the National Educational Technology Standards for Students (NETS•S) as they design, implement, and assess learning experiences to engage students and improve learning; enrich professional practice; and provide positive models for students, colleagues, and the community. All teachers should meet the following standards and performance indicators. As a preservice teacher I have begun to:

1. Facilitate and Inspire Student Learning and Creativity
Teachers use their knowledge of subject matter, teaching and learning, and technology to facilitate experiences that advance student learning, creativity, and innovation in both face-to-face and virtual environments. Teachers:
a. promote, support, and model creative and innovative thinking and inventiveness
b. engage students in exploring real-world issues and solving authentic problems using digital tools and resources
c. promote student reflection using collaborative tools to reveal and clarify students’ conceptual understanding and thinking, planning, and creative processes
d. model collaborative knowledge construction by engaging in learning with students, colleagues, and others in face-to-face and virtual environments
My Narrative:

I entered the MAT program at Pacific University with only a very basic technology background. I took a computer science class at Oregon State University where I learned how to use: Word, Power Point, Excel, and Photo Shop. However, I can't remember how to do most of what I learned. I have had a digital camera for about 6 years and I have operated a digital vidoe camera before, but I have never put together and edited a movie on my own. I had never heard of web 2.0, podcasts, or webquests. I knew people who had blogs, but never wanted one for myself. Through this technology class I have learned how technology can be very beneficial in the classroom.

I can now say that I have learned how to operate an Apple computer. I am still not very good at it but at least I can turn it on, right click, find the internet, and edit a movie. I still have a lot to learn about using one and all the programs they have to offer.  I also created a website for the first time by using the program Nvu. My technology class has been stressful, challenging, and rewarding. In the future, I plan to have a classroom website and blog to inform my student's family and friends what the students are learning and doing.

II. Design and Develop Digital-Age Learning Experiences and Assessments.
Teachers design, develop, and evaluate authentic learning experiences and assessments incorporating contemporary tools and resources to maximize content learning in context and to develop the knowledge, skills, and attitudes identified in the NETS•S. Teachers:
a. design or adapt relevant learning experiences that incorporate digital tools and resources to promote student learning and creativity
b. develop technology-enriched learning environments that enable all students to pursue their individual curiosities and become active participants in setting their own educational goals, managing their own learning, and assessing their own progress
c. customize and personalize learning activities to address students’ diverse learning styles, working strategies, and abilities using digital tools and resources
d. provide students with multiple and varied formative and summative assessments aligned with content and technology
standards and use resulting data to inform learning and teaching
My Narrative:

I was able to experience digital learning and assessment when I created my expressive arts video and my podcast. In my video, I taught first graders a lesson involving painting. My mentor teacher recorded it and then I edited the film and reflected on how the experience went. I think that this is a really good way to do a self assessment. It is also a good way for the teacher who assigned the project to visually see what you did and what you learned from your experience teaching. In the future, I would like my students to create a video and then record a self assessment on how their project went. What went well and what would they do differently if they were to do the project again.

Creating a podcast is another good way to see what students learned about a specific topic. It also allows students to address the podcast in what ever style they want. For example: it could be in the form of an interview or a scripted dialouge like in a play.

Designing a WebQuest allows teachers to design and devolp digital learning. My WebQuest is on the 50 states. I created the WebQuest to help students learn how to do research on the computer and record their information in the form of a fact book.
I also found a game on a website for students to play to get familiar with the physical location of the 50 states.

I also put together a digital book that my first grade students created. This could be a summative assessment of the art project that they were doing. I made this book for fun because I would like to develop a classroom library that has student work in it. I was also thinking that in my future classroom I could do a similar project but instead of making a book it could be a podcast  that showed the pictures and words, but the student could also listen to the words to improve reading skills.

III. Model Digital-Age Work and Learning.
Teachers exhibit knowledge, skills, and work processes representative of an innovative professional in a global and digital society. Teachers:
a. demonstrate fluency in technology systems and the transfer of current knowledge to new technologies and situations
b. collaborate with students, peers, parents, and community members using digital tools and resources to support student success and innovation
c. communicate relevant information and ideas effectively to students, parents, and peers using a variety of digital-age media and formats
d. model and facilitate effective use of current and emerging digital tools to locate, analyze, evaluate, and use information
resources to support research and learning
My Narrative:
I would like to create a classroom website to publish my students work as well as a blog to record what we did that day. I have seen both websites and blogs that do a very good job providing students, families, and friends this information. I also like how on a blog people can leave comments for the students. I think that this is a very good way to introduce digital work and learning. I have created a website about myself as well as a blog about my experiences in the MAT program and student teaching.

Creating podcasts and videos are other ways that I would like to incorporate technology to support learning in the classroom. A classmate and I created a podcast together and I found it to be very fun. I have posted the podcast on my website and blog. If  I designed a project for my students to create podcasts I could post them on my classroom website so that parents or even the community could have assess to them. I feel that a podcast or video would be a good way to let students creativly express what they have learned and could be a good replacement for a research paper or essay.

IV. Promote and Model Digital Citizenship and Responsibility.
Teachers understand local and global societal issues and responsibilities in an evolving digital culture and exhibit legal and ethical behavior in their professional practices. Teachers:
a. advocate, model, and teach safe, legal, and ethical use of digital information and technology, including respect for copyright, intellectual property, and the appropriate documentation of sources
b. address the diverse needs of all learners by using learner-centered strategies and providing equitable access to appropriate digital tools and resources
c. promote and model digital etiquette and responsible social interactions related to the use of technology and information
d. develop and model cultural understanding and global awareness by engaging with colleagues and students of other cultures using digital-age communication and collaboration tools
My Narrative:

I have tried to promote and model digitial information and technology while in my technology class. I plan to continue to model it as well as to teach to my students safe, leagal, and ethical uses of digital technology. I am a member of ISTE  to learn more about using digital-age communication and collaboration tools.

I know that wikis can be used as a learner-centered form or communication as well as other web 2.0 tools. However, I am only now starting to slightly understnd them. I feel that WebQuests are another way to address the diverse needs of learners because they are also learner-centered and interactive. Podcasts are another way to support diverse needs because there are so many different ways to approach creating one.

V. Engage in Professional Growth and Leadership
Teachers continuously improve their professional practice, model lifelong learning, and exhibit leadership in their school and professional community by promoting and demonstrating the effective use of digital tools and resources. Teachers:
a. participate in local and global learning communities to explore creative applications of technology to improve student learning
b. exhibit leadership by demonstrating a vision of technology infusion, participating in shared decision making and community
building, and developing the leadership and technology skills of others
c. evaluate and reflect on current research and professional practice on a regular basis to make effective use of existing and emerging digital tools and resources in support of student learning
d. contribute to the effectiveness, vitality, and self-renewal of the teaching profession and of their school and community
My Narrative:
I went to the OTEN conference where I learned about grants and what student teachers have done with their grant money. The information was inspiring yet overwhelming. I became a member of ISTE, where I have access to articles about technology. I also attended an inservice conference at the Science Factory, where I learned about inquiry science and collaborated with current teachers.

At my school, I sat in on a meeting about CPS (remotes) and Interwrite (kind of like a mini smart board). I took notes and tried to help my mentor teacher and principal learn how to operate them. My school is considering adopting them, so we decided that I should try to become familar with them as well.

Final Reflections

We live in a digital technology age and as much as I would like to run from it, I have learned it is easier to embrace it. I have never liked using computers or technology, but I also don't want to be a handicaped teacher because I do not know how to use technology. Over the past couple months I have learned how to create things that I didn't even know exisited. For example I created a website with multiple pages using a program called Nvu. On my website I have a WebQuest (which I had never heard of ) and a podcast (again I had never heard of ). The podcast was created in a program called garage band. Luckily my partner for the podcast knew a lot more about garage band than me, so it went smoothly. However, I do not think I could do it again on my own. I am still on training wheels when it comes to technology and need some help. I also used a Mac for the first time in my life. I did not only use it, I downloaded a video from a camera and then used imovie to edit the film. Once I had created a movie (complete with background music and credits) I imported it and my podcast onto iDVD and burned a DVD of my digital work. I can not believe that I have come this far. but I am afraid that I will forget all that I have learned, just like I did with my computer science class. I want to be able to incorporate technology into my classroom and have the resourses and materials needed to support it. I would like to have ipods with podcasts created by students and audiobooks. I would like my students to be able to create movies on imovie and have digital cameras to record their progress. I would love to have a classroom website so that parents and the community can be involved with what my students are learning and a blog to post their work. The only way that I can keep all the information that I have learned fresh is to keep using it and to continue learning from professional groups, peers, the community, and my students.
