My nephew, Patrick, age 8, wrote this story about my family's hike to scatter my dad's ashes last August, 2005. It is a compelling, thorough account of a very special day.
My Trip to Yosemite
By: Patrick Honma
Have you ever been to Yosemite? Well, that’s just what I did this summer. First, we drove to Yosemite, and met my relatives.
A couple days later we drove to Yosemite National Park and packed our bags so that we could start our hike. We hiked up to a point where there were lots of trees and we saw deer wandering around, so we took pictures of it. We journeyed through a meadow that had tall grass, a few streams, trees, and a lake called Cathedral Lake.
All of the sudden I heard my sister say,” Look a bear!” I wondered where it was? We took pictures of the bear. After that we kept walking and came to a waterfall. We had come to this waterfall because we were going to sprinkle my Grandpa’s ashes. My relatives and I took turns sprinkling my Grandpa’s ashes down the roaring waterfall. After we finished we had a snack.
We made our way back down, and found a patch of snow so we had a snowball fight. We got down and started to look for my Grandma. After we found our Grandma we put our bathing suits on and went swimming in Tania Lake. The lake is always freezing cold. So, if you haven’t been to Yosemite I think you should go because I had a remarkable time.
