Currently, I am enrolled in Pacific University’s 5th Year MAT Program. In 2003, I graduated from Oregon State University (GO BEAVS!) with a B.S. in Human Development and Family Science with an emphasis in Child, Youth & Family Services. I grew up in the small town of Gaston, Oregon, where with my family we farmed corn, wheat and onions. I have two dogs, ShimE and Brently and an American Quarter Horse named Hickory (Hick). I have spent my life around horses, and at a young age began showing Belgian Draft Horses at hitch shows across the Pacific Northwest. I stay active in my community helping to organize our community festival and car show, as chairperson of the Gaston Good Ol’ Days Parade held annually in August. I am also heavily involved in the sport of rodeo, and during college I held the title of Miss Rodeo Oregon (MRO). I stay very involved with the MRO program and currently serve as the National Director to Miss Rodeo America for the State of Oregon, giving me the opportunity to advise the Miss Rodeo Oregon titleholder each year.
On the farm with my Mom & Dad!
ShimE Dawg - She is a 9 year old Blue Heeler, her favorite food is BACON, and her favorite thing to do is bark at the air!
Brently - He is a 3 year old Border Collie/Austrialian Shephard mix, and his favorite thing to do is to dig holes in the hay fields (which he gets in
BIG trouble for)!
These pics are for my classmates, YES I was a rodeo queen!
Growing up I enjoyed school and have been blessed with many memorable teachers and education experiences. My favorite elementary teacher was my first grade teacher Miss Erceg, though she wasn’t at Gaston for very long, she made a lasting impression on me. I am excited that this coming spring I will be carrying out my student teaching experience in her former classroom at Gaston. My favorite high school teacher is Mr. Shope…and I don’t think there is any graduate from Gaston that would disagree with me. Mr. Shope taught at Gaston for 31 years, teaching my mother, aunts, uncles, cousins and siblings. I do not think there are many teachers in the profession like himfun, quirky, strict, and REAL! He retired in February of 2006 to live his dream…to serve in Afghanistan before retiring from the US Army.
I have always been interested in education and over the years have gained a great deal of classroom experience through my employment opportunities. Following high school I taught preschool in a small Headstart Program working with 3 and 4 year olds. For 3 years, I worked as an Instructional Specialist with Gaston High School in the Special Education Department, where I worked with students with a variety of disabilities ranging from learning disabilities, to mental retardation and autism. Before entering Pacific’s program I spent 5 months substitute teaching grades K through 8th in the Churchhill and Lyon County School Districts in the State of Nevada. Substituting gave me the most hands on experience and I believe has given me a true taste of what it will be like to have my own classroom. Not only was I able to pick up an assortment of ideas from teachers at all grade levels, but I was faced with many difficult situations that I know I will be much more prepared for in the future.
I look forward to completing the program and entering the teaching profession where I hope to foster strong relationships and lasting impressions with my students!
