Marine Animals WebQuest

Introduction

Hey fourth grade! Today we are going to transform into Marine Biologists! Marine Biologists are people who study the animals in the ocean. The ocean is full of amazing creatures that are able to swim in the darkest and deepest waters. It also has animals who are very intelligent and those who are fierce and vicious. Through this WebQuest we will be choosing a marine animal to study and figuring out what makes it special. When you choose your animal it is your job to become the expert on that animal! So lets get started on our aquatic adventure!

The Task

You can decide to study one of these four animals:
The Great White Shark The Blue Whale

The Bottlenose Dolphin The Sea Turtle

The Giant Octopus

As a Marine Biologist you will need to answer these about questions your animals:
What is their scientific name?
What do they eat?
How do they reproduce?
How do they breathe?
Where do they live?
What makes them interesting?
What is a danger to them(other animals as well as humans)?
How can we help their environment?

Each of you will create a final presentation on a Podcast with the other Marine Biologist who studied that animal. The Podcast will be posted on this website for everyone to enjoy!

The Process

First you will decide which animal you want to be an expert on.
Once you have chosen a marine animal you will need to get your research journal to collect information in.
Title the first page the animal you are studying and draw a colored picture of it.
Then, in your journal create a page for each of your research questions.
Finally you will explore these websites to find out information on your animal:

After you have collected all of the information on your marine animal you will write out a short essay detailing what you have found. It will be written as an informational text, as if you are writing in a science journal because you are an expert on this animal! You will include all of the answers to the questions above and write to entice the readers.
After you have written your article you will use www.google.com to do an image search of the animal you are studying.
Lastly, you will be using a recording device to create a podcast. The podcast will be a reading of you informational essay and using moviemaker will we combine the pictures you have found and add them to the recording of your voice. Resulting in an awesome set of podcasts on marine animals!

Evaluation

Alright Marine Biologists we will be evaluated individually on the the depth of information and the validity of the facts you state in the two final projects. Those being the informational article and the podcast. Here is how it will be grade:

Conclusion

Look at how much we have learned! You are all expert Marine Biologists on the animal you studied! By learning about marine animals we now have a responsibility to help keep their home clean, the ocean! The ocean gets covered in lots of trash everyday because people throw away things that can be recycled. So everyday we need to be aware of our actions and we working to recycle, keep the ocean clean, and protect marine life!
