This project marked the beginning of my formal experience with teaching. As part of an international service group, I volunteered to tutor Somali Bantu Refugees in Beaverton, Oregon. We read to pre-elementary school children, tutored school children with their homework and helped their mothers learn English.
The Somali Bantu children stole my heart and touched my soul. For years, I had often thought about becoming a schoolteacher. I enjoyed working with them so much that I decided to change careers. In January 2007, I left corporate America to work with children full time as a schoolteacher. |
