TECHNOLOGY OPERATIONS AND CONCEPTS.
Teachers demonstrate a sound understanding of technology operations and concepts. Teachers:
A. demonstrate introductory knowledge, skills, and understanding of concepts related to technology (as described in the ISTE National Education Technology Standards for Students)
B. demonstrate continual growth in technology knowledge and skills to stay abreast of current and emerging technologies.
I have always enjoyed computers and technology. From an early age I was playing with our computer trying to figure out what it could do for me. The first computer I had was a Mac. From there I was introduced to PCs and thought I would never go back. I became fairly proficient with Window machines in college. However, when it time to get a laptop for this program I decided it was time to go back to Apple computers. I am so glad I made that choice. I love my apple and have learned so much. It felt like I was learning how to speak a different language when I first started using my Apple, but it didn't take  me long to get rolling. I love my Power book and am able to use a wide range of programs on it. I have done stuff with it that I had never done on any computer before. I have made a website, a web quest, a few movie slideshows in imovie, a movie in imovie, a concept map in Inspiration and used Garage Band to edit music. I feel that my experience with both Apples and Windows has made it possible for me to adapt and learn new programs quickly on either platform. This is especially useful since the lines between Windows and Apples are blurring.

II. PLANNING AND DESIGNING LEARNING ENVIRONMENTS AND EXPERIENCES.
Teachers plan and design effective learning environments and experiences supported by technology. Teachers:
A. design developmentally appropriate learning opportunities that apply technology-enhanced instructional strategies to support the diverse needs of learners.
B. apply current research on teaching and learning with technology when planning learning environments and experiences.
C. identify and locate technology resources and evaluate them for accuracy and suitability.
D. plan for the management of technology resources within the context of learning activities.
E. plan strategies to manage student learning in a technology-enhanced environment.
I work in the computer lab at Pacific and am in charge of checking out all the technological equipment. This has made me realize that many schools have technological resources available to their students and teachers. This discovery led me to ask my mentor teachers what technology was available at Cornelius. I found that although the computers in the classrooms are very antiquated there is a projector that teachers can check out from the library and the principal has digital cameras that teachers can check out. In some of the lessons I have already taught at Cornelius I have used the projector. I really enjoy using the projector, because I feel it can make teaching and learning easier. For example I used it when teaching about Kandinsky, instead of holding up a book with small pictures, or passing out poor reproductions, I was able to use a powerpoint to show the students Kandinsky's art work. This was an effective learning tool. As a teacher I will also use technology to help myself stay organized, using digital grade books and calendars (I love my calendar on my Apple). I will also use computers and the internet for research on the topics I am teaching so I can be as informed as possible about subjects and also to find good lesson ideas. I am always looking for safe, quality websites that help students learn. Starfall is a wonderful website to help young students learn to read.  The first graders I work with use it everyday as a part of stations.

III. TEACHING, LEARNING, AND THE CURRICULUM.
Teachers implement curriculum plans, that include methods and strategies for applying technology to maximize student learning. Teachers:
A. facilitate technology-enhanced experiences that address content standards and student technology standards.
B. use technology to support learner-centered strategies that address the diverse needs of students.
C. apply technology to develop students' higher order skills and creativity.
D. manage student learning activities in a technology-enhanced environment.
I use technology in my own learning and daily life, and I know this will carry into my teaching as well, because I often cannot imagine doing certain things without technology. I want to have a projector in my room so that I can use it to help all students learn. I used the projector when I taught about Kandinsky and made a powerpoint that showed his art work. I also will want to utilize the word processing programs, by using them to make newsletters to keep the parents updated, as well as for students to "publish" their work. Students will need word processing skills, and so I want to provide them with pedagogically powerful ways to practice.  I really like the idea of having students type up their work, and then putting it in either a book, or online. I also would like to have my students use technology like digital video cameras to make projects like interviews with famous people, or "live"poetry reading, where they can read the poetry until they are happy with it and then showing the video finished project. Ideally, if the resources are available, I want the students to then make dvds with their videos using tools like iMovie and iDVD. I have also used digital photos and iMovie to help create a good classroom environment. I used digital photos of my first grader's Picasso unit and made a dvd and showed it to the students. It was a good way for students to review the unit, and built a classroom community because they saw each other in the video.

IV. ASSESSMENT AND EVALUATION.
Teachers apply technology to facilitate a variety of effective assessment and evaluation strategies. Teachers:
A. apply technology in assessing student learning of subject matter using a variety of assessment techniques.
B. use technology resources to collect and analyze data, interpret results, and communicate findings to improve instructional practice and maximize student learning.
C. apply multiple methods of evaluation to determine students' appropriate use of technology resources for learning, communication, and productivity.
I will use technology in my assessment and evaluation of students. I am working on a project with my 3rd grade teachers to have the students to create digital portfolios. I also would use technology for assessment and evaluation of students with the web quest I made. I used my project team video to assess my own teaching as well as a way to assess the effectiveness of the lesson and students' learning. I will use an electronic grade book. I will also integrate technology into my assessment. This means I would like students to do projects that utilize technology and then I will asses these projects. For example, students could conduct a mock interviews with famous people in history or animals to learn about their adaptations. I would like my students to engage in a number of electronic media projects, including the interviews, as well as digital portfolios and possibly travel commercials depending on the subject.

V. PRODUCTIVITY AND PROFESSIONAL PRACTICE.
Teachers use technology to enhance their productivity and professional practice. Teachers:
A. use technology resources to engage in ongoing professional development and lifelong learning.
B. continually evaluate and reflect on professional practice to make informed decisions regarding the use of technology in support of student learning.
C. apply technology to increase productivity.
D. use technology to communicate and collaborate with peers, parents, and the larger community in order to nurture student learning.
I have already been using technology to enhance my productivity and professional practice. I joined the International Society for Technology in Education (ISTE), this allows me access to the ISTE articles, and I get a monthly magazine from them about using technology in education. I also attended a technology conference in the fall and plan on attending another conference this spring. I have also used the internet to help do some research on my lessons, and finding the pictures for my Kandinsky powerpoint. I have also found a number of websites were I can find lessons, online communities for learning and communicate with otehr teachers. It is nice to have these resources available, because it means I will never really be alone when I am teaching, I can share ideas and ask other teachers questions.

VI. SOCIAL, ETHICAL, LEGAL, AND HUMAN ISSUES.
Teachers understand the social, ethical, legal, and human issues surrounding the use of technology in PK-12 schools and apply those principles in practice. Teachers:
A. model and teach legal and ethical practice related to technology use.
B. apply technology resources to enable and empower learners with diverse backgrounds, characteristics, and abilities.
C. identify and use technology resources that affirm diversity
D. promote safe and healthy use of technology resources.
E. facilitate equitable access to technology resources for all students.
One way I have model ethical practices related to technology is learning and knowing how to tell credible websites from uncredible ones. I have also learned internet copyright laws, and only use materials that I have a right to. Learning what is okay to use and copy is an important task when creating websites and home mailers. I also believe it is important to teach students internet safety and also internet copyright laws. I think technology can also be useful to help students from diverse backgrounds with different characteristics and abilities. Websites like Starfall, are designed to help children with a variety of abilities and strengths. Also websites like UNICEF's voices of youth allow students from around the world to chat with eachother about any number of topics in several languages. I think websites like these can help students learn about the global community and feel empowered because they can share their thoughts and ideas. This will also help them affirm diversity in the world.

Final Reflections
I thought I knew a lot about technology before taking this class, but I have learned so much more about technology and how it can be used in a pedagogically powerful way. I have found that my whole perspective on teaching is one that includes technology. When I envision my teaching I picture using computers, my laptops and a projector as well as a radio and cd player. I feel like all these technological tools can enhance my teaching and my students' learning.  I have noticed that this is different than the ways many of the teachers at my school envision teaching. I think of technology as such as an intergral part of teaching. I plan on using it for personal learning, for assesment and evaluation of my students and to enrich student learning. I have learned a lot over the past year and feel confident that the skills and techniques I have learned will carry over into my teaching and have provided me with the knowledge to learn about and utlilize new technology as well. I feel taht with the resources I have discovered I can stay up to date on new technologies and the novel and powerful ways they are being used in the classroom. I hope that as a technology competent teacher I can help prepare my students to live and compete in our technologicla society as well as provide them with powerful and exceptional learning experiences.
