I am from
Houses on corners with huge yards to play Summers full of blueberry picking and sweet homemade jam made from berries I helped pick A worn, yellow blanket that would never leave my side And too many stuffed animals, they could never quite fit on my bed I am from Family dinners, all sitting around the table Piano lessons that I never practiced enough for Games of P-I-G and H-O-R-S-E out in the drive way And me loosing every time I am from Tender pot roast and seasoned potatoes, Rich, creamy Doppa and dark, warm rye bread, Hot sauerkraut and corned beef with cabbage And sweet rice pudding every Christmas I am from Extra cheese in my mac-n-cheese Summer bar-be-ques with the family Easter Brunches And hot chocolate with extra marshmallows I am from Lacey dog who loves to cuddle Pom-poms and cheerleading skirts Purple and pink leotards, ice skates and tap shoes And a dusty softball glove so worn and soft it melts in my hand I am from A garden filled with tomato plants and blueberry bushes And one lone stalk of rhubarb A red and blue swing set, sandbox And tangled jump ropes I am from Big wheels and training wheels Roller blades complete with elbow, knee and wrist pads, as well as a helmet A big kid bike And the stop sign on the corner that was always base I am from The freshly cut grass my dad kept so green That cushioned my falls from handstands and cartwheels And was the stage for plays, Barbie fun And make-believe games I am from Don't count your chickens before they hatch If you can't say anything nice, don't say anything at all That's not very lady-like And GO DUCKS! I am from chicken-in-a-biscuit crackers Road trips to California or Spokane, always knowing we would get lost along the way Disney movies, Ramblin' Rod And Saturday morning cartoons I am from Sleepovers and prank calling with friends Birthday Bob - my karaoke'ing Grandpa Garage sales and coupons Sales and half-offs I am from Dixie cups and M&Ms at every birthday Pickles wrapped in foil in my lunch when it was dad's turn And Malt-O-Meal for breakfast Because I hated Cream of Wheat I am from The teasing my twin brother did Because he knew how to push my buttons And the nickname cry baby Because it's what I did I am from My friends telling me I have grown up taste Because I'll try anything And bed time stories Even in middle school I am from The University of Oregon The best friends I made The wonderful experiences I had And a broken heart that changed my world I am from Road trips with friends Laughing until I cry Ghiradelli chocolate milkshakes And Starbucks at Christmas I am from Overflowing scrapbooks filled with pictures, awards, letters And other memorabilia Shabby shoeboxes filled with every birthday, Easter, and Christmas card ever received And bulletin boards covered with trinkets I will never throw away I am from Picture frames that tell hundreds of stories Our smiling faces, our laughter and our friendship The attic where my doll house and kitchen set are, my Troll house and Baby Anna, My horses and fairy tale books, my dress up clothes And my childhood imagination I am from My family and friends The time spent together The experiences I've had The places I've been And the memories to come |
