Introduction
Neighbors, calling all neighbors! The other day a new family came to our community to live. The only problem is, they dont know anything about all the helpful community members we have in our town.
As helpful neighbors you and your classmates have just been called to get as much information about our community members as possible! Community members are so important, each and everyone of you are a community member!
Dont you ever wish someone told you who your different community members were and how they could help you? Havent you ever wondered what certain community members look like and what kinds of tools they use to help? This is what you all are here to do is help this new family by telling them about the different community members they can find in their new home town.
So put on your helpful neighbor hat and lets get to work!
The Task
This week you will be working with a few other neighbors. Each group will be its own neighborhood in you community! Your neighborhood will be given a specific community member and youll be researching these members together and individually, using online resources. This new family needs to know about what kinds of uniforms they have, where you can find them, what kinds of situations they can help you in, and any other helpful information that you feel like this new family should know.
When you have finished finding all this valuable information, you will be given the opportunity to present with your neighborhood to all the other community members in your class. By this time you will be experts on your community member and even have a kid size model to show to the class showing what your helpful community member looks like.
By the end of this task you and your neighbors will be able to confidently help other new neighbors in need in your community!
The Process
To get all the information to help our new family we must follow a few steps!!
Step 1: First you will be put into different neighborhoods with about four other classmates, to make about 5 groups. Each group will receive a specific community member helper to do research on!!
Step 2: Now that you have the community member that you will be researching you can now start looking for information! Your teacher will give out a questionnaire to record and help guide you as to what information this family is looking for!! Pictures are also wonderful sources so you can use them as references when making a kid size figure of your member later on in the week. There may not be enough time to find all the information you need in one sitting at the computer. So two days will be given to do your research.
Here are the online resources for your different community members! Good Luck!

Step 4: Great job! Now that you have all this fantastic information to help your new neighbors we need to make sure all the information you collected is helpful! Get together with your group and decide what information will be of most help to the new family! The teacher will hand out a graphic organizer that will help you organize all of your great research!
It may be helpful to give each person a job:
Recorder: writing the information down
Discussion leader: youre the person who keeps the conversation/activity on task
Topic one: you pick a certain topic everyone was assigned to research (perhaps you are the person who asks questions about what tools this person uses)
Topic two: You do the same as topic one but pick a different topic (perhaps you are the person who asks questions and gathers information about what kinds of ways they help the community)
Topic three: same as topic one and two you just choose another topic of research to gather and ask questions about the information that was found.
Step 5: You and your group will write an informative letter (with the information on your groups graphic organizer) to the new family about your community member to put on the back of your kid sized model you will make in the next step!
Step 6: Time to show the community what your helpful member looks like pick a member of your neighborhood to trace on a piece of white butcher paper that the teacher gives to you and your neighborhood. After you have traced a member then its up to you to craft an outfit/uniform out of construction paper available in the room and other art materials that are available to you!
Things to keep in mind putting on your community member helper:
- Tools they use
- What they wear that helps them help you!
- What shows the community that this is what they are (examples: Badges, name tags
)
Get creative and have fun!!
Step 7: Time to get ready to present your wonderful community member!
So what will happen during our presentations?
- You will get a portion of the room to call your neighborhood!
- You will post your community member in that area of the room and for the presentation time you will put your letter about your member out on the table in front of your person. Each person needs to have a couple pieces of information about your person to share with your community members that come over to your neighborhood!
- Two neighborhoods at a time will go around and look at the other neighborhoods and write information they learn about their community members. Use the graphic organizers provided by the teacher!
Step 8: Put on your name on your presentation graphic organizer, and make sure all of your neighborhood members have put their names on the back of your kid size community member helper, and your letter turn them all into the teacher at the end of the day so your teacher can post all your letters and community members in the school so we can help the rest of our student community know more about how our community members can help them!!
