Introduction
Welcome to the Great Barrier Reef!

The Great Barrier Reef, off Australia's east coast, is one of the wonders of the natural world. The Great Barrier is teaming with wildlife, including dugong and green turtles, varieties of dolphins and whales, more than 1500 species of fish, 4000 types of mollusk and more than 200 species of birdlife. The Great Barrier Reef system consists of more than 3000 reefs!

Task
You will be going on a Great Barrier Reef Scavenger Hunt! Your job is to answer all the questions listed below. When you are done you can play the Coral Reef Game! You and your partner then must pick one animal that lives on the Great Barrier Reef and write at least three sentences about that animal. You are encouraged to draw a picture of your animal. These animal reports, along with those of your classmates will be made into a classroom book!
Process
There are two parts to this process. Read all the direction to both parts before you begin!!!

Part One

You must work with a partner. Be sure your name and your partner's name are on your answer sheet!

  1. Find a creature that is poisonous to other animals.
  2. Find an animal that eats coral.
  3. List two fish that live on the Great Barrier Reef.
  4. Find a mollusk that does not have a shell.
  5. Name a creature living on the Great Barrier Reef that changes color.
  6. Name a marine mammal that lives on the Great Barrier Reef.
  7. Find a creature that has tentacles.
  8. Name a fist that is over-fished by humans.
  9. Find a fish that needs another creature for shelter and protection.
  10. Which animal attacks its prey with a sharp, spear-like tooth?

To answer these questions you will need to go the National Geographic Website. First you will click on the orange Dive Now button. Then you can click on the plus signs to find answers to the question. The arrows on the bottom of the screen will take you from the shoreline out towards the deep ocean.
