This particular lesson is designed designed for 2nd and 3rd grade geography but also includes lessons on research, art, creative expression, and writing.  This lesson could be modified to fit all grade levels at the elementary level by making the requirements either more difficult, or less.  It would not be best to start this lesson in great detail before the 2nd grade level, but it could be introduced to a lesser extent. 

The students should be at a developmental level where they understand how to search for information either in a book, on the internet, or in a children’s magazine.  The children should obviously be able to read and write and should have a basic understanding of animals.
