I spent eight months volunteer teaching in Israel after I graduated from the University of Oregon. I taught in two very different placements in two very diverse cities.
One cite was in Jaffe, Isreal at the Arab Israeli Peace Center which was an after school program for government sponsered at very-risk children. There Israeli's and Arab's were placed together for after school meals, homework programs, and extra-curricular activities. I helped out with all activities and taught a dance class.
The second place I volunteered in was a low-socio economic school where I taught English to grades 2nd-5th. I learned a lot about different cultural values for education and different methods and hardships of teaching in such a neighborhood.
I also spent one year teaching English and technology eductaion to teachers and students after I graduated from high school in Israel. I taught in a low socio-economic neighborhood in a classroom I made out of a storage closet. Teaching grades sixth through eigth was not only very rewarding but made a large impact on the school and students. I also ran many volunteer projects throughout other parts of the country.
