A WebQuest on Native Americans Along The Lewis and Clark Trail

Introduction:

This lesson was developed to supplment the lack of informaton on the Native American tribes across the Lewis and Clark trial.

When teaching about Lewis and Clark, this lesson is to allow the student to reflect about another point of view on the Lewis and Clark Trail and Corps of Discovery expedition. 


Learners:
This lesson is intended  for 4th grade students and involves Social Studies and Speech skills.

This webquest is to follow the study of the Lewis and Clark trail during the 4th grade. Students should know how to locate and create a map containing  the Lewis and Clark trail. Students should be familar with taking notes off  an internet website.

The type of thinking skills that are encouraged during this lesson, Was Lewis and Clark really discovering the west for the first time and how did the Native Americans feel about the Corps of Discovery Expedition? This should create a group discussion  that involves critical thinking, comparison, and creative problem solving.    
   

The Process:
    This project will require an average of 1 - 2 weeks of 30 minute day of working time. There should be alotted time during the end of the 2 weeks for presentations. This project is Student  directed with the teacher offering scaffolding to reach a higher level of communication skills. It is intended for students to work seperately buy peer edit each others papers to help develop editing skills for presentation. The students might become confuesed when they are given the directions to interview a native american tribe member. This is where the teacher will need to provide extra examples as to how to create answers to reflect a interview format. 
  1. You will be assigned a Native American tribe member. This tribe member is the person that you will interview for  the Security State document. Remember, when  researching the answers to your questions, the answers are from the perspective of the Native American tribe member, not your own.
  2.  Questions, you will want to ask, are conviently located in this following web link. These 6 questions are required for the assigniment, however you are not limited to 6 questions. This is only a  stepping stone to a broader horizon. 
  3. The answers you use from your question need to be throughly researched. It is not acceptable to make up an answer. The following web resources are listed by Native American tribes. This will help you answer your questions in a scholarly manner.

  1. After you have you research you may begin working on how you will present your research on the Native American tribe member you interviewed. The report will need to include artwork, pictures, six or more questions, and a map locating the Native American tribe along the Lewis and Clark Trail. 
  2. When you have completed your  interview and presentation piece, you can submit it to the teacher to be graded. 
  3. The interview and presentation piece will be graded on content, presentation, and spelling. this is aindividual project and you will be graded as a individual.

    Students will be able to demonstrate their understanding of different historical perspectives by creating a interview with a specific Native American tribe and asking questions pertaining to the Lewis and Clark trail and Corps of Discovery Expedition.

Conclusion:

This lesson is valuable to teach students to think about the concept of history being told from a one sided perspective
.


You have completed your interview research report on a Native American tribe along the Lewis and Clark Trail. This report has allowed you to recognize the tribes along the lewis and clark trail and what their opinion was about  the corps of discovery expedition.  In addtion, you have used the computer to research  and design a interview report to present to the class.
