Where I'm From
I'm from
A Momma of only 15, a true baby herself
From a gift of adoption, a product of divorce
and a new Mom of poor health

I'm from
Mexico, Africa and an “Indian Nation” somewhere
a little Black girl with mixed nappy hair
From a swirl of culture, skin color and race
lessons of perseverance, head strong and His grace

I'm from
Green manicured yards, tall oak tress and bloody skinned knees
From picket fenced homes and “don't forget to say please”
From riding bikes with closed eyes and hands in the air
and a feeling of life never seeming quite fair

I'm from
Organic food, stacks of magazines and freshly cut flowers
From baked chicken, black beans and playing for hours
“Bust a Bucket” sing-a-longs and fur trees built like towers

I'm from
“You welcome," “Boo Boo” and she'll never know
From “Fo sho” and “Honey I don't think so”

I'm from
Summer family party season, it's all you can eat
From Orcas Island, Montana and burnt summer feet
From music, dancing and Margaritas so sweet
Its moments with “family” that make me complete

I'm from
Feisty Aunt Kali, Grandma Shirley and Aunty Wen
From Momma, LáLá and my favorite Birthday Twin

I'm from
Dancing and singing, it's where I begin
Emotion and feeling that explodes from within
From a girl who spent time just trying to fit in
