Introduction

Hello, First graders,

I am a kindergarten teacher and I know you have all been studying the animal groups.  I could use your help!  I don't have any good books on the animal groups for my students.  You see we are a small school that was destroyed by hurricane Katrina and we are trying to get some new schoolbooks to rebuild our schools program.  My students and I would be so happy if you could help us out by making nice little books on each animal group.  This would help my kindergartners so much!  They could then understand what animals belong in each group.  Thanks for your help first graders!

From, a Teacher in need of Animal Group Books

Task

I think we should create little Animal Group booklets as a class.  What do you think we should make sure each page has on it?  I bet it would be helpful for kindergarteners to see a picture of at least one animal for each animal group.  I also think if we write down three characteristics of all the animals that belong to each animal group the kindergarteners will understand them better.  What do you think?  Let's come up with a list of things that each page in everyone's booklet should have.  If we do that then we will create a lot of clearly understood and good animal group books!

Process

Since, we have been studying the animal groups this should be a fun way to make sure what we are learning to true.  Let's get familiar with exploring the website for one whole day with your fifth grade buddies!  They are coming in to help us in understanding how to properly use a website for looking up important facts.

Next week, after we have clearly discussed what each animal group is and what a characteristic is, then we will explore the website and begin to research and record the information we are finding in partners.  I will give each of you a partner to work with.  You each will have a number and we will make it fair for everyone to get the same amount of time on the computers okay!

When you receive your own booklet to put your information on then you need to do the following as was discussed in class:

            1.  So you will each get a blank booklet

            2.   Every 2 pages will be labeled as an Animal Group

            3.   Using a web site you will discover what an animal in that group looks like

            4.   You will find out what Animals in that group must have

            5.   You will draw a picture and label 1 animal for each group

            6.   You will write 3 or more characteristics of the animals that belong in the labeled animal group

            7.  Once completed we will make a nice published version of each booklet

* Don't worry we will all help each other to do this project!  You can all do it, just listen and follow all instructions while looking at the website!

I can't wait to see what you will discover and write about!  LET'S GET STARTED!

Evaluation

First graders, I will check to see how well your booklets are when you are finished with making them!  I will be looking to see if you all have at least three characteristics listed for each animal group.  I will also see if each of you has one labeled drawing of an animal for each group.  I will hope you all will listen and work extra hard to follow all the directions when you are in the computer lab.  It is very important we all listen while in that computer room!  Below is a chart of what I will look for while you are making your booklet.  I know you all will do a GREAT job!  I am excited to see your books!
