My Philosophy of Early Education

My philosophy of education represents my purpose for wanting to become a teacher. Children learn in many different ways and it is important for me to have optimal learning strategies ready for my students' needs in the classroom. Developing an optimal environment for student learning is crucial to their early educational success. Determining the role of the student, and teacher is important to the entire educational management and learning process. My philosophy expresses my expectations of my students, my interest in working with children, and goals to developing a foundation for their educational success.

Purpose of Education:

As a teacher knowing the purpose for providing an education is a key to understanding the successful practices within the art of teaching. I believe education exists for the opportunity to encourage people to learn a well-rounded quantity of information useful for their daily lives. Education is a catalyst for free thinking, and developing new ideas that enable a person to develop multiple forms of expression and self-concept. Education should exist for people to develop multiple forms of intelligence, methods for reasoning, and application of the mind's abilities.

Curriculum of the Classroom:

The purpose of the curriculum in the classroom is to provide students with a critical understanding of multiple subjects that enable a foundation for further educational instruction. The curriculum should focus within cognitive, social, physical, linguistic, intellectual, personal, cultural, and emotional development. The curriculum should be student-centered within multiple areas of study, and enable numerous possibilities for assessment. Within the process of teaching the designated curriculum, the teacher should focus on the student's optimal learning strategies, so every student is able to understand the lessons and keep up with the lesson pace. The curriculum within the classroom throughout the school year should reflect the benchmarks set by teachers, the school, and state.

Characteristics of a Teacher:

A teacher should have specific characteristics that demonstrate their ability to educate students. A teacher should be accountable for their actions, responsibilities, and demonstrate their professionalism. A teacher needs to act professional within their classroom setting, school, and community. The teacher has to appear confident in front of the students, be well prepared for each lesson plan, and quick to respond to problems student interests that may alter the flow of the lesson planned. An elementary school teacher models appropriate practices, acceptable behavior in the classroom, school, and society. A teacher should have a positive perspective towards what is important for their students' education plan.

Role of the Teacher:

The teacher should show their interest, express their excitement, and demonstrate positive reasons for why the information is important for the students. The teacher is responsible for everything that happens within their classroom, and takes an active role of responsibility for the school's optimal daily function. It is the teacher's responsibility work with students to create classroom rules, keep students on task, and provide security/safety for the students. A teacher needs to be attentive towards students' learning abilities, cultural differences, and special needs enabling them to receive a successful learning experience. This includes adapting curriculum to the students' cultural background and IEP's. A teacher should scaffold students, and be supportive for students with thei learning process. It's important that teachers have fun with the curriculum, provide relevant examples that are enjoyable, interesting, promotes further engagement, and leave students wanting more.

Role of the Student:

The student within the classroom should be actively engaged in the material. They should be conceptually willing to try new things, and enjoy the material's purpose. Students should know their rights, be aware of the personal needs, and seek resources and support when needed. Students' role in the classroom is to follow established classroom, and school rules. The student should be actively participating by asking questions, contributing to discussions, working with peers, and focusing on the lessons set by the teacher. It's the students' responsibility to tell the teacher that they don't understand something. Students should know what is expected of them, and be aware of possible consequences that may occur if not observed and respected. The student's role in the classroom is to have a fun, be enthusiastic, and have a playful learning experience. It is important for the students to feel like their learning experience is productive and advocate for ways to make their learning experience more enjoyable.

Optimal Classroom Environment:

Creating a classroom environment that is welcoming, organized, and well managed is an important aspect of providing students with an optimal educational experience. A classroom should have enough space that is appropriate for the number of students and the grade level. It is important that students have a place in the classroom where they can use a computer, read a book, practice their writing skills on chalk board/white board, do group work, and call their personal work space. A classroom should have the resources it needs to assist the students' productivity and learning experience. It is the teacher's responsibility to set up the classroom with the proper materials needed for the daily lessons, and year-round curriculum plans.

Why I Want to Teach:

I am a teacher because I work with children. I enjoy the satisfaction of knowing that I helped someone learn something new and accomplish an educational goal. For me teaching is an opportunity to create many social connections and friendships with my students, and their parents/guardians within the community. When I teach, I know I will always be guiding someone towards a sustainable educational goal.
