"Working together to make things easier" First Grade
In first grade, students can be introduced to community as a neighborhood and their town. Have students think about one road in their town and the types of buildings they find on that road. Questions to ask:
This is a great opportunity to introduce a map of a neighborhood and talk about streets, directions, and buildings. Let students look at a map and figure out how to get from the school to the grocery store. What direction are they going? Is there more than one way to get there?
This first grade classroom in Banks, OR created a map of their town on the wall of their classroom. The main street was drawn and then students put the things they thought were important on the map.
Each student cut out their own house and colored and labeled it.
Then students estimated where they thought their house might be.
Trees were added. The grocery store, the police station, the school, the doctor's office were also created.
Notice in this picture, the student who drew the school labeled the four table groups in their first grade classroom. At this age, how the students fit into the community is very important.
