Introduction

Congratulations! Yours is the winning entry in the Oregon Kids Tourism contest!

You have been selected to take a three-week trek through Oregon and write a travel brochure for kids, which highlights places in Oregon that you think will appeal to other kids.

You will travel through five regions of Oregon in a camper, a Jeep, and by bicycle. You will take photos and write in a travel journal about each place you visit. Then you will design a brochure that includes at least one of your favorite places from each region. Your brochure will be published for other kids, so you'll want to make it look really great!

So, pack your bags and let's go!

Task

You will visit weblinks and read about fun places to visit in Oregon. Then, you will design a brochure that features your favorite place or places to visit in each region of the state: northwest, southwest, central, northeast, and southeast. You will write about the place and include a picture. If you've never made a brochure, don't worry, I have designed a template to help you make one. It's fun and easy!

Process

To complete this task you will need notebook paper and a pencil. You will also need the template for your brochure. Click the links below to print the template and the instructions. After completing the trek you will paste your writing and pictures in the areas provided, following your teacher's instructions.

Brochure Instructions

First, you will visit the weblinks below that interest you and learn about the fascinating natural areas in Oregon.
  • When you visit each site, write notes about your favorite places. Note what it is about each place that captures your attention and makes you want to visit it. Jot down important facts and interesting information. (You can come back to the webpage later to get more details and photos if it is one of your choices.)
  • After you have finished your trek, look at your notes and choose at least one place in each region to write about in your brochure.
  • Go back to the websites for those places and write a detailed description, remembering to write down down the website where you got the information. (The instruction sheet has more information about what to write and how to write it.)
  • Print a picture for each of the places you will write about in your brochure. If you don't know how to do this, your teacher or another student can help you.
  • Complete your brochure! There is an instruction page with the template to show you how.
  • Share your brochure with your classmates.
Let's get started!

WebQuest

Weblink Instructions: The Oregon region pages are linked below. Click on the names of places listed on the region pages. Each place name will open in a new window. Don't open too many at a time or you might feel overwhelmed! Close some before opening more.

Don't try to visit all the links now. There are a lot of links so that everyone can find something of interest in every region. Just choose a few of the ones that are most interesting to you. If you REALLY like Oregon you can check back when you have free time and learn more!

When you finish with one region, taking notes and printing a picture, close all of the windows and go to another region.

Use these links to help you navigate to the regions. Each one will open in a new window:

Pictures for Your Brochure
You can print pictures from the websites you visit, or you can go to Google Images and search for pictures to print. If you use Google Images, the first pictures on the page are usually the best. Be sure to give credit to the photographer, with your teacher's help.

Completing Your Brochure
You will need the notes you wrote. Follow the directions on the brochure handout to complete your brochure.

Evaluation

You will be evaluated individually on the thoroughness of your investigation, careful note-taking, the quality of your brochure, and your class presentation.
