The ISTE National Educational Technology Standards (NETS•T) and Performance Indicators for Teachers

Effective teachers model and apply the National Educational Technology Standards for Students (NETS•S) as they design, implement, and assess learning experiences to engage students and improve learning; enrich professional practice; and provide positive models for students, colleagues, and the community. All teachers should meet the following standards and performance indicators. As a preservice teacher I have begun to:

1. Facilitate and Inspire Student Learning and Creativity
Teachers use their knowledge of subject matter, teaching and learning, and technology to facilitate experiences that advance student learning, creativity, and innovation in both face-to-face and virtual environments. Teachers:
a. promote, support, and model creative and innovative thinking and inventiveness
b. engage students in exploring real-world issues and solving authentic problems using digital tools and resources
c. promote student reflection using collaborative tools to reveal and clarify students’ conceptual understanding and thinking, planning, and creative processes
d. model collaborative knowledge construction by engaging in learning with students, colleagues, and others in face-to-face and virtual environments
My Narrative:
Through exploration of various technological tools I have developed my knowledge of technology. As a result I will be better prepared to help my students to use technology tools to express themselves creativly and to solve problems using technology.

In my classroom publishing students work is a way of authenticating their learning. To learn about how to help my students publish their work I investigated various online book publishing sites. I tried out several different sites and programs and developed a report on the which site were easiest to use and which sites offered the most creative flexibility.

I am a contributor to a wikispace. This wikispace is dedicated to my MAT cohorts growing and  changing perceptions on classroom management. The site is organic in nature and any member can contribute or edit the document. In this sense it is always changing and adapting to our collective understanding of classroom management.

To assess my own teaching practices and to broaden my technology skills I created a DVD. The DVD includes myself teaching an expressive arts lesson and my commentary reflecting on the strengths and weaknesses of the lesson. This was a great experience to really reflect on my teaching practices.

II. Design and Develop Digital-Age Learning Experiences and Assessments.
Teachers design, develop, and evaluate authentic learning experiences and assessments incorporating contemporary tools and resources to maximize content learning in context and to develop the knowledge, skills, and attitudes identified in the NETS•S. Teachers:
a. design or adapt relevant learning experiences that incorporate digital tools and resources to promote student learning and creativity
b. develop technology-enriched learning environments that enable all students to pursue their individual curiosities and become active participants in setting their own educational goals, managing their own learning, and assessing their own progress
c. customize and personalize learning activities to address students’ diverse learning styles, working strategies, and abilities using digital tools and resources
d. provide students with multiple and varied formative and summative assessments aligned with content and technology
standards and use resulting data to inform learning and teaching
My Narrative:

I designed a digital aged learning tool for students grade 4-6. This tool gets students online, navigating my site and the many resource sites I carefully selected for them to view. Through this learning tool I hope students will develop online research  and navigation skills. The final assessment of the webquest allows students to choose one of a number of projects (both digital and not) so they can display their learning in a manner unique to them.

My classmate Karen and I created a podcast. A podcast is a digital recording sometimes accompanied with photos. A podcast can conveys information in a novel way for students. This particular podcast contributes to the webquest I created on Oregon Native Americans.

III. Model Digital-Age Work and Learning.
Teachers exhibit knowledge, skills, and work processes representative of an innovative professional in a global and digital society. Teachers:
a. demonstrate fluency in technology systems and the transfer of current knowledge to new technologies and situations
b. collaborate with students, peers, parents, and community members using digital tools and resources to support student success and innovation
c. communicate relevant information and ideas effectively to students, parents, and peers using a variety of digital-age media and formats
d. model and facilitate effective use of current and emerging digital tools to locate, analyze, evaluate, and use information
resources to support research and learning
My Narrative:

Through the course of the Technology Methods class at Pacific University I was able to experiment with different programs and software. Through this experience I gained knowledge and skills that have prepared me to be a member of a digital world and to educate others about various technological tools.

I established a blog to document my experiences during the MAT program at Pacific University.

I have an active Delicious account where I bookmark valuable educational links. These resources are then available for others to search and use as well. In this way I contribute to a larger network of people.

My website is a testament to the skills I gained. Never did I think I would be able to create my own website. To create the website I used the program Golive. The process of learing and using the program resulted in a deeper understanding of web based applications.

IV. Promote and Model Digital Citizenship and Responsibility.
Teachers understand local and global societal issues and responsibilities in an evolving digital culture and exhibit legal and ethical behavior in their professional practices. Teachers:
a. advocate, model, and teach safe, legal, and ethical use of digital information and technology, including respect for copyright, intellectual property, and the appropriate documentation of sources
b. address the diverse needs of all learners by using learner-centered strategies and providing equitable access to appropriate digital tools and resources
c. promote and model digital etiquette and responsible social interactions related to the use of technology and information
d. develop and model cultural understanding and global awareness by engaging with colleagues and students of other cultures using digital-age communication and collaboration tools
My Narrative:

In all of my work with technology I have strived to model responsibility and citizenship through using the best judgment to choose age appropriate sites for young people to visit. Additionally I respect the work of others and give credit were it is needed. I am grateful to be a citizen of a global digital network and use that responsibility wisely.

My podcast includes a credits slide that shares the websites from which information and images were gathered.

V. Engage in Professional Growth and Leadership
Teachers continuously improve their professional practice, model lifelong learning, and exhibit leadership in their school and professional community by promoting and demonstrating the effective use of digital tools and resources. Teachers:
a. participate in local and global learning communities to explore creative applications of technology to improve student learning
b. exhibit leadership by demonstrating a vision of technology infusion, participating in shared decision making and community
building, and developing the leadership and technology skills of others
c. evaluate and reflect on current research and professional practice on a regular basis to make effective use of existing and emerging digital tools and resources in support of student learning
d. contribute to the effectiveness, vitality, and self-renewal of the teaching profession and of their school and community
My Narrative:

In 2008 I attended a number of conferences that contribute to my personal growth and development of technology knowledge. Additionally I have Joined the professional group International Society for Technology (ISTE). All of these serve as valuable resources for improving my practices as a teacher.

I have also written a Grant through the Oregon Technology in Education Network.  This grant will build provide funds to purchase technology tools. These tool will be used in the classroom to extend and deepen student’s understandings of unit content.

Final Reflections

I began The MAT program with very limited technology skills. I was intimidated and overwhelmed with the prospect of using technology in the classroom. Now, I have tried various programs and created a number of products that exemplify my ability to use these programs.  I am proud of what I have learned. These skills  and resources I have acquired will add so much to my future classrooms. My students will have opportunities to demonstrate their learning through varied technology mediums. The possibilities are endless.
