TECHNOLOGY OPERATIONS AND CONCEPTS.
Teachers demonstrate a sound understanding of technology operations and concepts. Teachers:
A. demonstrate introductory knowledge, skills, and understanding of concepts related to technology (as described in the ISTE National Education Technology Standards for Students)
B. demonstrate continual growth in technology knowledge and skills to stay abreast of current and emerging technologies.
My Narrative:
I demonstrate introductory knowledge, skills, and understanding of concepts related to technology and the nature of technology in my ability to produce a website which includes links and digital photos I took and altered. I created a movie, filmed by my mentor teacher, and edited by me.

I demonstrate my continual growth in technology by subscribing to ITSA, receiving both the electronic news letter and the magazine. I have attended the fall OTEN conference, as well as a workshop for Teacher Web Page design.

II. PLANNING AND DESIGNING LEARNING ENVIRONMENTS AND EXPERIENCES.
Teachers plan and design effective learning environments and experiences supported by technology. Teachers:
A. design developmentally appropriate learning opportunities that apply technology-enhanced instructional strategies to support the diverse needs of learners.
B. apply current research on teaching and learning with technology when planning learning environments and experiences.
C. identify and locate technology resources and evaluate them for accuracy and suitability.
D. plan for the management of technology resources within the context of learning activities.
E. plan strategies to manage student learning in a technology-enhanced environment.
My Narrative:
I have designed a webquest for a second grade class. The WebQuest takes into account the developmentally appropriateness and uses technology to enhance the teaching of the unit. The webquest incorporates current research on learning with technology by encouraging students to do research electronically while maintaining a safe environment in which they can learn. My homepage includes links to my WebQuest as well as other innovative educational sites which I have deemed accurate and appropriate. I use these educational websites to plan and execute learning activities for my students such as the WebQuest I created about the Great Barrier Reef. Using the WebQuest to manage student learning allows students to construct their own understanding of the information while maintaining a safe environment, and maintaining the accuracy and appropriateness of the information students are finding.

III. TEACHING, LEARNING, AND THE CURRICULUM.
Teachers implement curriculum plans, that include methods and strategies for applying technology to maximize student learning. Teachers:
A. facilitate technology-enhanced experiences that address content standards and student technology standards.
B. use technology to support learner-centered strategies that address the diverse needs of students.
C. apply technology to develop students' higher order skills and creativity.
D. manage student learning activities in a technology-enhanced environment.
My Narrative:
My WebQuest is a prime example of using technology to help meet content standards. Students can use my webquest to learn about the Great Barrier Reef and conduct research on the animals living on the reef. WebQuests are very student centered, allowing the student to facilitate their own learning. WebQuests allow students to move through information at their own pace catering to the needs of diverse learners. WebQuests use technology to develop a wide range of higher order skills and creativity.

IV. ASSESSMENT AND EVALUATION.
Teachers apply technology to facilitate a variety of effective assessment and evaluation strategies. Teachers:
A. apply technology in assessing student learning of subject matter using a variety of assessment techniques.
B. use technology resources to collect and analyze data, interpret results, and communicate findings to improve instructional practice and maximize student learning.
C. apply multiple methods of evaluation to determine students' appropriate use of technology resources for learning, communication, and productivity.
My Narrative:
I have applied technology to my lesson planning and evaluation of student performance. One example is my webquest with which I will determine students' understanding of using technology as a resource. As stated in my Evaluation section of my WebQuest I have created a rubric including the interaction with the web. As part of my webquest students are evaluated based on cooperation with each other, their time spent interacting with the web, and their understanding of how to find information. Technology can be used to collect, analyze data and interpret results in a number of ways. While spread sheets are an effective way of analyzing data, I used digital video to collect information about my students and my own strengths and weaknesses as an educator.

V. PRODUCTIVITY AND PROFESSIONAL PRACTICE.
Teachers use technology to enhance their productivity and professional practice. Teachers:
A. use technology resources to engage in ongoing professional development and lifelong learning.
B. continually evaluate and reflect on professional practice to make informed decisions regarding the use of technology in support of student learning.
C. apply technology to increase productivity.
D. use technology to communicate and collaborate with peers, parents, and the larger community in order to nurture student learning.
My Narrative:
The use of technology is essential in teaching and in learning. I continue to seek out opportunities to engage in professional development in the area of technology. I attended the 2005 Fall OTEN conference, and plan to attend the spring conference as well. I have attended a workshop on creating and maintaining teacher pages for Raleigh Park Elementary School Staff Development. I subscribe to ISTE, receiving electronic newsletters and updates, as well as a monthly magazine. As you can see from this profile I use technology to increase my productivity, using a laptop and various programs for word processing. I have participated in WebCT to communicate with my peers, use email regularly, and have created a website to communicate and collaborate with the community. I have also created a WebQuest to aid student learning.

VI. SOCIAL, ETHICAL, LEGAL, AND HUMAN ISSUES.
Teachers understand the social, ethical, legal, and human issues surrounding the use of technology in PK-12 schools and apply those principles in practice. Teachers:
A. model and teach legal and ethical practice related to technology use.
B. apply technology resources to enable and empower learners with diverse backgrounds, characteristics, and abilities.
C. identify and use technology resources that affirm diversity
D. promote safe and healthy use of technology resources.
E. facilitate equitable access to technology resources for all students.
My Narrative:
I understand that my role as a (student) teacher is to model and teach legal and ethical practices related to the use of technology. By reviewing and adhering to NET standards I will maintain an ethical use of technology. I see technology in many of its forms as a way to include all learners regardless of background, characteristics, or abilities. I believe that technology should be used in such a way as to encourage equity and promote diversity. It is important that technology be used in a way that promotes safety for students. WebQuests are a wonderful to introduce students to the internet as a way to conduct research because it allows students to move in the web in a secure and guided environment.

Final Reflections

As I become more technologically minded I am finding uses for technology I had never before imagined. I have created a website, a WebQuest, edited digital photos, and created a digital video. While those are accomplishments I am very proud of, the thing I have done that I am proud of the most is the most simplistic. I taught a seven-year-old to type. This student is bright and sweet but his physical needs make it difficult for him to express his intelligence and thoughtfulness in writing. It has even been difficult to assess him in a varitey of areas because he is unable to hold and manipulate a pencil. He had all but stoped trying. Then I had an idea. I sat him down at one of the two student computers in the classrooms and opened up a word document. In three months he has gone from writing three to four words in a sitting with a pencil, to writing paragraphs on the computer. As impressive as creating a website is, it is nothing compared to a seven-year-old hunting and pecking out a paragraph about what he did over the weekend.

All of this has taught me that the complexities of technology can be boiled down to something as simple as the idea that a child with a motor skills disorder could type instead of write. I believe that technology is for everyone, and there is no better place to utilize all its pieces than in the classroom.
