One assignment from our expressive arts class was to create our own expressive arts lesson to implement into one of our placements. I chose to implement the lesson with the kindergarteners and first graders because there is more flexibility the Early Learning Community. During this time, the class was learning about leaves during the fall. I thought it would be interesting to keep the theme of leaves but to use them in an expressive way. I saw leaves on a tree as a community. Therefore, I wanted the students to create a community using leaf printing. We started by watching a video of a reading of “The Alphabet Tree” https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yNs9gyS7FY4 This story discussed using letters to make words that make sentences on a tree. I showed an example of my “family tree” that I created. Students chose to create family or friend trees as well. One student created a tree that made a sentence. Overall, every student met the objective of the lesson in creating a tree that displayed a community.
