I am from family photos hung on painted walls Great grandma's carefully decorated ceramics A piano playing music through generations And sturdy oak furniture made by my father I am from vibrant flowers lining a trimmed lawn Fluffy rabbits prancing through lush, green grass An excited dog ready to lick my face And a defective hammock in which to rest I am from walking paths through endless fields A refreshing pool on hot summer afternoons Soccer fields of crusted, dried out grass And spectacular fireworks on the 4th of July I am from summer campouts in the wilderness Weekend outings to the sandy shores Road trips in the squished family mini van And decorating, remodeling, and redecorating again I am from parents Dawn and Gary Grandparents Patricia, Richard, Marlee and George Surrounded by aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends And older sister to Karen and Katie I am from This is the life when on vacation Life's not fair when I'm complaining Family stories shared through the years And the deep, strong voice of my grandpa singing I am from delicious French pancakes on Sunday mornings Barbequed hamburgers, baked beans, and potatoes Piping warm spaghetti with tasty meat sauce And warm chocolate chip cookies and gooey brownies I am from childhood memories Tucked away safely in my head Stored in cardboard boxes under the eaves And framed in pictures hung on painted walls - Renée Peront, July 2007 - |
